Good morning, and happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend and managed to stay warm! We have some exciting upcoming events to share with you this week.
First off, this week is our Bake-Off Fundraiser co-hosted by OutLaw and PILS! Show off your baking skills and indulge in sweet treats while supporting a great cause. Baked goods can be submitted to one of five categories to be judged by our panel of LGBTQ+ (and allied) staff! Thanks to the sponsorship of Choate LLP, OutLaw will provide bakers with (most) ingredients at their request! The Bake Off Competition will take place on Thursday, February 6th, so you will just need to drop off your baked goods by 4:30 pm that day in the Charles River Room (5th Floor). Make sure to register in advance through our Google Form: tinyurl.com/outlawbakeoff.
All proceeds from the Bake Sale the following day (Friday, February 7th) will be donated to GLESN. Tell your friends to come by some treats and support a good cause! GLSEN Massachusetts is a grassroots initiative, working locally in our community to ensure safe schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. There are 43 chapters around the country doing this important work. Find out more about GLSEN here! Faculty and staff are eligible to compete in the Bake Off, although judges cannot compete in any categories that they are judging. Come for the cupcakes, stay for the cause!
Identity Document Assistance Training: Calling faculty, staff, and BU School of Law students, the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff and OutLaw are hosting the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC) to provide training for those seeking to assist others with legal name changes. This 75-minute training will provide trainees the knowledge to offer one-on-one support and referrals to legal resources in their community. Light refreshments will be served. There are limited spots, so please pre-register. It will take place on February 21 from 2-3:15 pm. Location provided upon registration.
Help pack care packages and write encouraging notes to unhoused individuals in the metro Boston area, all to be donated to Pine Street Inn and Rosie’s Place, who are among the largest homeless services providers in New England. All members of the law community are welcome to come by any time between 10:30 am - 2:30 pm.
A staff member from Pine Street will join us around noon to share more information about their shelter and ways to volunteer with them. Please swing by if you’d like to learn more!
Teach-In/Know Your Rights Training: Join ILPS, the BU Immigrants’ Rights Clinic (IRC), and PILS for a teach-in by Professor Sherman-Stokes to learn more about Trump’s recent executive orders and a Know Your Rights presentation on Thursday, February 13th from 5:00pm - 6:30pm in Room 103! This is an important chat to learn what steps we can take to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities in the face of increased immigration enforcement. The event will conclude with a Q&A session, and we encourage attendees to submit their questions here. This event is open to the entire BU community—students, staff, faculty, and workers are all welcome. This event is not open to the public. Please reach out to ilpsbu@gmail.com if you have any questions. (Pizza will be provided!)
We can’t wait to see you at these events and more throughout the semester. Keep an eye on these emails for updates on events, resources, and opportunities. Feel free to reach out anytime with any questions, concerns, or baking recipes.
For those interested in volunteering with PAIR to assist them with intakes in the ICE unit at Plymouth County Correctional Facility, this training will introduce you to ICE detention and PAIR's intake process. All are welcome, even if you're unable to volunteer this semester.
Join ILPS and the BU Immigrants’ Rights Clinic (IRC) for a teach-in to learn more about Trump’s recent executive orders and a Know Your Rights presentation.
