Hi, everyone!

Good morning, and happy Monday! We know this past week has been difficult for many of us, with election results that may feel heavy or disheartening. It's okay to take a step back and acknowledge those feelings. In challenging times, finding community and support can be essential, and we’re here for you. OutLaw will continue to provide spaces for connection, conversation, and resilience-building. If you need to talk or just a place to process, please don’t hesitate to reach out or join us at our upcoming events. We are truly in this together.

Our Cooley lunch panel is finally here! Join us today from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in room 204 to hear tips from Cooley attorneys on networking, interviewing, and just generally navigating the legal field as a new attorney. Lunch from Noon Mediterranean will be provided! Feel free to stay shortly after 2:00 pm to network with the panel attorneys.

Our annual networking event is also this week! On Thursday, November 14th, join us for our Out and About Panel & Networking Reception. There will be catering! We will have a panel discussion from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm in room 103, followed by a networking reception from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in Barrister’s Hall. Our panelists will be Connie Browne (BU Law, Clinical Professor), Bethany Johnson (Proskauer, Associate), Vivian Etter (BU Law, Lecturer and Clinical Instructor), Court Diercks (South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Staff Attorney), and Michael Haley (GLAD, Staff Attorney). We have had a lot of attorneys RSVP, so be sure to check it out! Please register in advance either via law docket or our google form so that we can make name tags. Remember, one of the best ways to stand out to employers is by showing them that you are someone they want to work with. Lots of other law students have good grades and compelling extracurriculars, so distinguish yourself by being authentic and personable.

Lastly, our OutLaw Drag Show is next week! Come out and dance with us on Saturday, November 23rd from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm at Club Cafe! This truly will be the event of the semester!! We have a great lineup of drag queens set to perform, and we can’t wait to see all of you there. Feel free to bring $1 bills to tip the performers!

Calling All 2Ls and 3Ls!
Latham & Watkins is generously sponsoring a moot court team from BU Law to participate in the 2025 UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute Moot Court Competition, the first national moot court competition dedicated to issues regarding sexual orientation and gender identity law. Through Outlaw's collaboration with Latham, the sponsorship will cover team member’s trips to Los Angeles to participate in the competition. Special shout out to our Networking Chair, Caroline Crawford, for helping to build these community relationships that enable our members to engage in opportunities like this. The participating team members will need to commit to the following dates and deadlines:

February 11, 2025 – Briefs due
March 15, 2025 – Preliminary, quarter-final, and semi-final rounds
April 11, 2025 – Final round of competition

The competition accepts teams of up to three students. To apply, students should fill out the form Saturday, November 16, at 5:00 pm. Preference will be given to students who have participated in moot court competitions before and students in their final year of law school.

You can also get in contact with BU Behavioral Medicine for more mental health resources. Did you know? They have a number of support groups, including an LGBTQ+ support group. Check them out here!

Fun Fact: 
The Massachusetts Bar Application includes zero questions about mental health or substance use. For more information on the bar exam mental health character and fitness questions in other states, check out the ABA guidelines here. Remember, mental health support makes you a better advocate for your clients, as well as yourself.

BU Law has its very own chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG). "The National Lawyers Guild is a progressive public interest association of lawyers, law students, paralegals, jailhouse lawyers, law collective members, and other activist legal workers, in the United States." In particular, the "Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild works to change the structure of our political and economic system. We seek to unite the legal community with organizers and activists in the service of the people, to the end that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property interests." In addition, click here to learn more about the BU Law Health Law Association. Both orgs are holding networking receptions soon, so be sure to attend to build community! The Careers in Reproductive Justice event will be on Wednesday, November 13th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Barrister's Hall. Register here. BU Law also has a wonderful host of professors who specialize in reproductive justice. If you are interested in potentially doing research with them at any point while in law school, we highly recommend that you reach out via email to start building those connections now. Professors love to talk about their specialties! Your OutLaw Secretary worked a paid, full-time research position for the BU Program on Reproductive Justice last summer, and it was fantastic, so reach out if you have any questions! Hint: they might hire multiple research fellows next summer ;)

New Student Org Alert! 
BU Housing Organizing & Movement Empowerment Society (HOMES) is open to all students interested in housing justice and community organizing! Housing insecurity is particularly prevalent among queer individuals, and OutLaw is proud to support the community by facilitating housing justice efforts. Through participation in the meetings, rallies, and legal education efforts of local grassroots organizations, members of HOMES have the opportunity to learn from the efforts of community organizers and assist them in any way that they can. If you're interested in learning more or becoming involved in HOMES, join their GroupMe here!

Scholarship Opportunity!
Per their flyer, “the Dukeminier Awards Student Writing Competition annually recognizes the best law review note written by a student in the field of sexual orientation and gender identity law. The first-place winner will receive the Jeffrey S. Haber Prize for Student Scholarship and an award of $1,000 and will be published within Volume 24 of the Dukeminier Awards Journal of School Orientation and Gender Identity Law.” All law students are eligible!
