Subject: Happy Monday, OutLaw!

Hi, everyone!

Good morning and happy Monday! Hopefully you are all getting excited for Hal-LAW-ween. We can’t wait to see all of your costumes at Royale on Thursday! As things really start to kick into gear, make sure to check in with yourself mentally and physically. Well-being and balance can be tricky as a law student, but that does not make them any less critical. If you need any assistance–with anything from outlining to accessing basic food necessities to just wanting to chat about that annoying gunner who won’t shut up in torts–please reach out to any member of the OutLaw board. I promise we don’t bite (even on Halloween, that’s assault and battery).

Merch Alert! If you are interested in getting merch, please fill out an interest form here by this Wednesday, October 23rd. Please note that this is not an interest form. We are trying to gauge interest to figure out pricing.

Our long-awaited Demystifying Practice Groups Panel with Wilson Sonsini is this Thursday, October 24th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in Room 410. Free Chipotle will be provided! This is a great opportunity to learn more about different practice areas and get some insight into what it’s like to work at a top firm with a commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion. It is also a great opportunity to get some free Chipotle! Even if you are not interested in big law, it can be helpful to attend these events to get comfortable being around attorneys in a semi-professional environment. One of the biggest networking tips I can impart on any of you is this: attorneys are just people too. Don’t be afraid to talk to them simply because they have had privileges in life that allow them to work in prestigious positions. You are just as worthy and capable as any of them. Some people’s stories will genuinely surprise you, so make sure to reach out and socialize with your future colleagues (for better or for worse) if you have the capacity.

Movie Night this Friday at the LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Center! Take a break from studying to build community with the BU LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Center as they screen No Looks Pass at 6:00 pm this Friday, October 25th. Per the event description, “No Look Pass is an identity quest film that follows Emily Tay’s transition into adulthood between her senior year at Harvard (where she ranks 23rd nationally for assists thanks to her signature move, the no look pass) into her first year playing professionally in Europe. Emily’s Buddhist parents risked everything to emigrate from Burma in 1980 to Los Angeles’ Chinatown and expect Emily to return home after graduation and comply with an arranged marriage. But Emily must follow her own American Dream, which means moving to Germany and falling in love with a U.S. servicewoman living under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” Check out the IMDb here!

Upcoming events in November to put on your radar! We know November is an incredibly busy month for all of us, so we want to flag some upcoming OutLaw events for you all to put on your calendars. On Monday, November 11th, join us for a lunch panel with Cooley from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in room 204. Speakers will share tips for interviewing, navigating the legal field, and understanding different types of law. Lunch from Flour Bakery will be provided. On Thursday, November 14th, join us for our Out and About Panel & Networking Reception in Barrister’s Hall. There will be catering! We will have a panel discussion from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm followed by a networking reception from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Our panelists will be Connie Browne (BU Law, Clinical Professor), Bethany Johnson (Proskauer, Associate), Vivian Etter (BU Law, Lecturer and Clinical Instructor), Court Diercks (South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Staff Attorney), and Michael Haley (GLAD, Staff Attorney). Attorneys from all career fields–from public interest to big law to academia and beyond–have RSVP'd to the networking reception, so be sure to stop by and meet some of your fellow queer attorneys. We strongly encourage all 1Ls to attend to help build their networking confidence in a low-pressure environment (if you have the capacity, of course). Finally, our OutLaw Drag Show is on Saturday, November 23rd from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm at Club Cafe! This truly will be the event of the semester!! We have a great lineup of drag queens set to perform, and we can’t wait to see all of you there.
