Published jointly with the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics since 1975, this is a quarterly, interdisciplinary periodical containing professional articles, student notes, and case comments; summaries of recent legislative and judicial developments; and book reviews in the area of health law and policy. The Chinese Law Association (“CLA”) is dedicated to providing a platform for BU Law students and legal scholars interested in Chinese law, Chinese legal practices, and U.S.-China relations to develop a deeper understanding of Chinese legal doctrines, compare and contrast the two nation’s legal systems, and to discuss potential career in the Chinese legal market. The Client Counseling Competition focuses on the skills essential to effective client communication. Sponsored by the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association, this competition involves teams of two students each who engage in an initial consultation with a client about whom they have very limited information. Judges score each team according to nationally-based criteria, assessing students’ knowledge of the law and their ability to ask the right questions and elicit the important information. Winners proceed to competitions at the regional and national level.

Intellectual Property (IP) is a robust field with increasing law student interest. Our mission is to connect Boston University Law students with attorneys in IP law; to expose students to the sub-fields of IP, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyright law; and to demonstrate the importance of intellectual property in various industries.

The society will build a community by connecting students with potential job opportunities, and by connecting students with resources within the School of Law and the greater Boston area to facilitate students’ own career development. To that end, we will foster a network of professional support composed of attorneys, students, and faculty. This community will serve as a broad forum for discussion of current and developing issues in the field of IP law.

The society will engage with members through panels, social events, mentorship programs, and other organized programs. Technology has become an exciting yet powerful force in every aspect of daily life, business, and law. Our mission is to serve BU Law students interested in the broad legal sector of Technology Law and to expose all students to the increasingly pervasive fields. We aim to engage law students in the broad range of relevant practice areas that Technology Law encompasses, including Corporate Law, Intellectual Property, Business Consulting, Employment, Data Security, and Privacy Law, among others.

We are distinct from other current student organizations at BU Law by covering the extensive range of practice areas that fall under the umbrella of Technology Law. Our club aims to make accessible the sector of Technology Law to all students, regardless of academic background or professional experience. Membership in Lawyers in Technology will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender expression, age, nationality, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status.

BU Law seeks to establish a Technology Law program distinct from its established and robust Intellectual Property department through clinic partnerships and the introduction of leading faculty in transactional and regulatory departments. There exists several technology-focused legal fields that do not neatly fall into the Intellectual Property department, including FinTech, Privacy, Data Security, and Start Up Law, among others. Lawyers in Technology seeks to connect students to these programs and faculty so that the BU Law community can grow at all levels towards a strong Technology department in this cutting-edge space.

The Mock Trial program at BU Law is a student-coached trial advocacy program. Students are taught how to write and conduct direct examinations, cross examinations, opening statements, closing arguments, and motions in limine as well given an introduction to the federal rules of evidence and federal rules of civil procedure. Students use their skills to prepare and conduct fictional cases before actual practicing judges and attorneys. Negotiation skills are in great demand, and the American Bar Association sponsors a national competition to develop these skills in law students. In the law school’s intermural competition, two teams of two students each participate in a simulated negotiation session based on a hypothetical fact pattern. A panel of judges scores the teams, and winners go on to compete on regional and national levels.
