On the Docket - 10/04/24

Student  Affairs - Friday, October 4, 2024
 Events   On the Docket

Announcements/Deadlines

ALL: Building Access. Starting Friday, October 11, the building will be card swipe access only at 5 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

ALL: Flu & COVID shots. BU offers the flu and COVID shots for all faculty, staff, and students. Flu clinics open on October 18th for students, and you must make an appointment via the Patient Portal. You can find more information at Student Health Services.

1Ls & 2Ls: Study Abroad Information Meeting. Are you planning to study abroad for either a semester or full year? Do you want to learn more about the incredible opportunities available to BU Law students to live and study at a foreign law school? If so, please join us in Room 103 on October 9 from 1-2pm to find out more! For any questions, please contact John Laplante at johnlap@bu.edu.

ALL: Tell incoming students about your housing! Please take about 5 minutes to share your housing insights with the next generation of students. Here is the Link to the Housing Survey. The results from respondents will be used to update a housing guide for incoming students with the help of VeryApt, a startup in the real estate technology industry.

ALL: BU Law Language Partner Program. Are you looking to gain greater proficiency in a language other than English? We are launching a new program that pairs JD students with native speakers from our LLM program, offering an opportunity to improve second-language skills. The goal is to foster mutual benefit and meaningful connections between students.  Students can meet for coffee or in whatever manner/time works best for them. As this is a new initiative, we are still assessing the availability of suitable conversation partners, but we hope to match interested students as effectively as possible. If you would like to participate, please RSVP here.

2L and 3L: Represent the Student Voice on a Faculty Committee. The JD Curriculum and the Community and Inclusion faculty committees are looking for student representatives! If you are interested in fulfilling this role, please reach out to SGA (sgalaw@bu.edu) and Student Affairs (studaff@bu.edu) ASAP. See SGA Monday Morning email on Sptember 30th for more information.

ALL: BU Meetup Returns for AY24/25! Calling all graduate students! Are you looking to meet people from different departments and grow your BU network? BU Meetup invites you to do just that – enjoy more casual interactions across academic units. Back for a third year with an improved user experience, this program will match students from different departments into small groups to meet for a walk, coffee, or outing of their choice.

3Ls: California Bar Applicants. The State Bar of California is conducting the California Bar Exam Experiment. This experiment will test the newly developed CA-specific multiple-choice questions and the new remote or test center exam delivery systems in two phases. Phase One will be held November 8th, and those who wish to participate must register for the CA Bar Exam by October 13th. Phase Two will be a two-hour session the day after the July bar exam. Participants may be eligible for an additional 40 points on their bar score for participating. This is a developing experiment. Students planning on applying for the February or July 2025 California Bar Exam are encouraged to confer with Prof. Freudenheim or Associate Dean Muir, if you have questions about the experiment or whether to participate. More information is available through the FAQ.

World Mental Health Day

How are you doing? Check on yourself this THURSDAY, October 10, with in-person mental health screenings (free and confidential!), on Charles River Campus, 11:00am to 3:00pm, GSU Plaza (775 Comm Ave, next door to the law school). Rain location: GSU B03A.

As we approach World Mental Health Day, the Student Affairs team wants to provide you with resources to support you across multiple dimensions of your wellbeing, including: core needs, emotional wellbeing, physical wellbeing, intellectual/occupational wellbeing, spiritual wellbeing, and social wellbeing. This week we will focus on core needs and emotional well-being resources. Look for more each Friday in October!

The foundation of an individual’s wellbeing is having their basic, or core, needs met. These include food, clothing, shelter, and safety.
  1. Food resources & other core needs. Food resources for BU students experiencing food insecurity, including the Food pantry, Terrier meal share, drop-in dinners, info on SNAP, and more.

  1. Professional Clothing Closet – on hold, but it will be re-opening later this fall. In the meantime, check out this helpful BU Today article for a curated list of local thrift and secondhand stores in the Boston area.

  1. Shelter - Emergency support from Dean of Students Office. Law Student Affairs is available to support students who are facing challenges outside of class. At times, however, emergencies are best supported through the University Dean of Students Office, including in cases of fire, flood or other emergencies that urgently impact housing. Their urgent assistance request form is linked on that page.

  1. Safety and Ethics reporting. Threats to safety take many forms. The resources included on this page (sorted alphabetically) range from options to report bias and harassment to Behavioral Medicine, BUPD and the Ombuds.
